What Common Uses of Infrared LED?
Infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are not used to light up screens and monitors like other LEDs; instead, they are generally used for non-visual applications and night lighting. The application of infrared LED depends on its nanometer (nm) or wavelength, usually between 808nm and 940nm. Infrared LED TV remote control and automatic card reader are equipment used in daily life. The use of infrared LEDs can be divided into two types: direct LEDs and reflective LEDs, and the way in which infrared light-emitting diodes interact with receiving diodes determines the use of LEDs.
The remote control uses infrared light-emitting diodes.
At 808nm, where the infrared frequency is lower, infrared light-emitting diodes are commonly used for non-visual applications, but can also be found in security cameras. Solid-state lasers, medical lasers, and equipment can use this infrared frequency. Infrared lighting can also be used here, allowing security cameras to work without light at night, although the images they capture are usually of lower resolution. At 830 nanometers, this type of infrared is used in automatic card readers in subways and hotels.
Between 840 nanometers and 870 nanometers, infrared LEDs are more common in vision applications. These LEDs are used in waterproof cameras and day and night security cameras in shops and intersections. Non-visual applications of this wavelength mainly appear in silent alarm systems and door phones.
The highest infrared LED signal is 940nm, which is the most commonly used one by consumers. This is the LED responsible for the remote control function, including TVs and digital video disc (DVD) players. Wireless game controllers also belong to this list. Any device that uses a remote control with infrared technology uses this LED signal.
To make the infrared LED work, one of two control methods must be used. The direct light has a light emitting LED in the control device and a receiving diode in the receiving device, and the emitting device does not need to be directed at the receiving device. This method is a modern method; it is more convenient to use because the user does not have to point directly at the controller on the device.
The old method reflects light, and there are two diodes in the controller unit. With this type of controller, the controller device must be pointed accurately to the device to work, otherwise it will not be able to capture infrared reflections. Although this is not convenient, it allows a longer functional distance between devices.
