LED SLEEP LIGHTS

2. Why Does Night Lighting Matter for Sleep?

Difficulty falling asleep, light sleep, and frequent nighttime awakenings have become common concerns for many people.

One often-overlooked factor is the light environment before and during sleep.

Many conventional night lights use warm-white LEDs because their yellowish appearance feels softer and more comfortable to the eyes. However, a warm color temperature does not necessarily mean that the light is free from shorter-wavelength blue light.

Light in the blue and blue-green region can have a stronger influence on the body's circadian system and may suppress melatonin production when exposure occurs at night. Therefore, simply changing the color temperature of a conventional white LED may not be enough when the goal is to create a sleep-friendly lighting environment.

This is why spectral composition is becoming an important consideration in the design of sleep-oriented lighting products.

Instead of simply making the light "warmer," a more targeted approach is to select wavelengths with minimal short-wavelength content and design the spectrum specifically for nighttime use.

3. Guangmai's Sleep-Friendly Night Light LED Solution

To address this requirement, Guangmai Technology has developed a dual-wavelength LED light source solution based on red and amber-orange light.

Recommended Configuration

Parameter Recommended Solution
LED Package 3535 SMD LED
Red Light 620–650 nm
Amber-Orange Light 590–600 nm
Total Power 2 W
Dimming PWM stepless dimming
Control Dual-channel independent control
Short-Wavelength Blue Light Eliminated from the selected LED spectrum

The red and amber-orange channels can be controlled independently, allowing the final lighting product to offer different light colors and brightness levels for different nighttime scenarios.

Why Red and Amber-Orange Light?

620–650 nm red light

Red light is located at the longer-wavelength end of the visible spectrum and has considerably less impact on the circadian system than shorter-wavelength blue light. It can therefore be considered for low-level nighttime illumination where maintaining a sleep-friendly environment is important.

590–600 nm amber-orange light

Amber-orange light provides a warm and gentle visual environment and is suitable for situations where a small amount of illumination is needed, such as getting up during the night, moving around the bedroom, or preparing for sleep.

By avoiding short-wavelength blue light in the selected LED spectrum, the solution focuses on spectral control rather than simply adjusting the correlated color temperature (CCT).

4. Three Lighting Modes for Different Sleep Scenarios

The dual-channel architecture allows product designers to create multiple operating modes according to different nighttime requirements.

Mode 1: Pre-Sleep Mode

Red + Amber-Orange

Both channels are turned on at low brightness to create a warm and gentle lighting environment before bedtime.

The low-intensity, long-wavelength-oriented spectrum can help reduce exposure to shorter-wavelength light during the pre-sleep period.

Mode 2: Nighttime / Getting-Up Mode

Amber-Orange Only

The 590–600 nm amber-orange channel provides soft illumination for nighttime activities such as getting out of bed, walking around the room, or checking on children.

The goal is to provide sufficient visibility without introducing unnecessary short-wavelength light into the nighttime environment.

Mode 3: Low-Level Sleep Companion Mode

Red Only

The 620–650 nm red channel can operate at very low brightness as a subtle background light.

This mode is suitable for users who prefer a small amount of ambient illumination while sleeping, while minimizing exposure to shorter-wavelength visible light.

5. Dual-Channel Design for Flexible Product Development

A key advantage of this solution is the independent control of the two LED channels.

The red and amber-orange LEDs can be switched and dimmed separately, allowing product manufacturers to customize the lighting behavior according to their product design.

For example:

Red + amber-orange: pre-sleep ambient lighting

Amber-orange only: nighttime navigation or getting-up lighting

Red only: low-level sleep companion lighting

PWM dimming: flexible brightness adjustment

Independent channels: customized lighting modes and control logic

This architecture can be integrated into a variety of sleep-oriented products, including:

Sleep night lights

Bedside lamps

Children's night lights

Smart sleep lamps

Baby room lighting

Wellness lighting devices

Circadian-friendly lighting products

Smart home lighting systems

6. From "Warm Light" to "Spectrum-Oriented Lighting"

Traditional night-light design often focuses on color temperature: warmer light is generally considered more comfortable for nighttime use.

However, color temperature alone does not fully describe the spectral characteristics of a light source.

For sleep-oriented lighting, designers can take a more targeted approach by considering:

Wavelength → Spectral distribution → Light intensity → Exposure time → Application scenario

This means that instead of simply selecting a conventional warm-white LED, manufacturers can develop a light source specifically optimized for nighttime environments.

The combination of 620–650 nm red light and 590–600 nm amber-orange light provides an alternative LED architecture for sleep-friendly lighting products, especially where minimizing short-wavelength exposure is a design priority.

7. Customized LED Solutions from Guangmai Technology

Different sleep-lighting products may require different optical power, brightness, beam angles, package sizes, wavelengths, and control methods.

Guangmai Technology can customize LED light sources according to specific product requirements, including:

Custom wavelength ranges

Multi-channel LED configurations

3535 and other SMD packages

Different optical emission angles

Customized power levels

PWM dimming compatibility

Independent multi-channel control

Sample development and mass production

With in-house LED packaging capabilities and application-oriented development experience, Guangmai Technology works with customers from initial wavelength selection and prototype development through to mass production.

For sleep lighting and wellness applications, choosing the right spectrum is not simply about making the light look warmer. It is about designing the light source around the biological and practical requirements of nighttime use.
