UV LED Technology for Disinfection and Photocatalytic Air Purification
With the increasing demand for healthier indoor environments, air purification systems are evolving from simple filtration solutions toward integrated technologies combining filtration, sterilization, and pollutant decomposition.
UV LED technology provides a compact, energy-efficient, and mercury-free solution for air purification equipment. By combining different UV wavelengths, a single air purification system can achieve both microbial inactivation and photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants.
Shenzhen Guangmai Electronics (GMKJ) provides customized UV LED light source solutions based on Aluminum Nitride (AlN) ceramic substrates and quartz lenses, designed for long-term operation in air purifier systems, fresh air equipment, and industrial purification modules.

Our UV LED products are manufactured with strict quality control and reliability testing, supporting applications from prototype development to mass production.
2. Dual-Band UV LED Air Purification Solution Overview
The dual-band UV LED air purification solution uses two independent optical channels with separate electrical control:
1) UVA Photocatalytic Deodorization Channel
Wavelength: 365–370nm
The UVA LED activates photocatalytic materials such as TiO₂, generating reactive oxygen species that help decompose formaldehyde, benzene, and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
2) UVC Air Sterilization Channel
Wavelength: 270–280nm
The UVC LED directly damages the DNA/RNA structure of microorganisms, helping to inactivate bacteria, viruses, and airborne pathogens.
Both channels operate independently and can be controlled by the system MCU:
UVA mode only: for VOC and odor reduction
UVC mode only: for air sterilization
Dual mode operation: simultaneous purification and disinfection
The LED package uses a 3535 AlN ceramic substrate with quartz lens, providing high thermal conductivity, UV resistance, and long-term reliability under continuous operation.

4. Role of Different UV Wavelengths in Air Purification
270nm UVC – Air Sterilization Wavelength
The 270nm UVC wavelength is highly effective for microbial inactivation.
It works by damaging the DNA and RNA structure of microorganisms, reducing the activity of bacteria and viruses in flowing air.
Compared with traditional mercury lamps, UVC LED solutions provide:
Compact size
Instant on/off operation
No mercury pollution
Flexible system integration
365–370nm UVA – Photocatalytic Decomposition
365–370nm UVA is widely used for photocatalytic applications.
When combined with photocatalytic materials such as TiO₂, UVA irradiation generates active radicals that help break down:
Formaldehyde
Benzene
TVOCs
Other organic pollutants
This makes UVA LEDs suitable for odor removal and indoor air quality improvement systems.

5. Recommended UV Wavelength Selection
265–275nm UVC
A high-efficiency germicidal wavelength range suitable for applications requiring stronger sterilization performance.
365–370nm UVA
Preferred wavelength range for photocatalytic oxidation due to good activation efficiency of TiO₂ materials.
385–395nm UVA
An alternative photocatalytic wavelength with higher optical output, but slightly lower photocatalytic activation efficiency compared with 365–370nm.
254nm
The traditional mercury lamp wavelength used for UV sterilization. It is mainly associated with mercury lamp technology and is less suitable for solid-state UV LED solutions.
6. Technical Challenges in UV LED Air Purification Systems
Unlike surface sterilization applications, air purification systems process moving air inside a duct where exposure time is limited.
Therefore, UV LED systems face several technical challenges:
1) Thermal Management
High-power UV LEDs generate significant heat.
Poor thermal design can cause:
Reduced optical output
Wavelength shift
Accelerated LED degradation
GMKJ uses AlN ceramic substrates with high thermal conductivity to reduce thermal resistance and improve long-term stability.
2) UV Lens Aging
Conventional silicone lenses may experience:
Yellowing
Cracking
Reduced light transmission
after long-term UV exposure.
GMKJ UV LEDs use high-purity quartz lenses, providing better UV resistance and maintaining optical performance over extended operation.
3) Wavelength Accuracy
UV applications require precise wavelength control.
A wavelength shift of only several nanometers can reduce:
Photocatalytic activation efficiency
Sterilization performance
GMKJ performs strict wavelength binning to maintain stable UV output.

4) Ozone Control
Some short-wavelength UV emission may generate ozone.
Through optimized chip selection and wavelength control, GMKJ minimizes unwanted short-wave emission and helps reduce ozone generation risks.
5) Optical Efficiency in Airflow Systems
Because air moves quickly through purification channels, photon utilization efficiency is critical.
Instead of simply increasing LED quantity, optimized optical design, reflector structures, and photocatalytic material matching can improve purification efficiency while controlling system cost and heat generation.
