The advantage of vertical chip:

1. Higher junction temperature: compared with normal flat chip with Tj=120C, vertical chip LED has Tj with 150C. It means it is more stable compared with normal leds.

2. Vertical chip leds can distribute the light further if you use small lighting angle lens or reflector. So it is mainly used for the LED torch light and LED flash light. 

3. Vertical chip LED has better lighting shade compared with normal chip. So it can be used for LED wall washer lights for the buildings.
