    Why uv wavelength is harmful to human eyes and skins?

    Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a type of electromagnetic radiation with shorter wavelengths than visible light. It is divided into three categories based on wavelength: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UV radiation from the sun can be harmful to human eyes and skin due to its ability to cause damage at the cellular level. Here are the primary reasons why UV radiation is considered harmful:

    UV light is harmful

    • Eye damage: UV radiation can cause damage to the eyes, particularly the cornea and the lens. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation is associated with conditions such as cataracts, which can lead to vision impairment. The cornea can also be affected, leading to conditions like photokeratitis (similar to sunburn but affecting the cornea) or pterygium (a growth on the eye's surface).
    • Skin damage: UV radiation can penetrate the outer layers of the skin and affect the DNA within skin cells. This can lead to various skin issues, including sunburn, premature aging (wrinkles and age spots), and an increased risk of skin cancers, such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.
    • Immunosuppression: UV radiation can suppress the immune system in the skin, reducing its ability to defend against certain diseases and increasing the risk of skin cancer.

    UVA rays have longer wavelengths and penetrate the skin more deeply, contributing to premature aging and an increased risk of skin cancer. UVB rays have shorter wavelengths and primarily affect the outer layers of the skin, causing sunburn and contributing to skin cancer. It's worth noting that the Earth's atmosphere absorbs almost all UVC and the majority of UVB, allowing only UVA and a small amount of UVB to reach the surface.

     

    To protect against the harmful effects of UV radiation, it is essential to use sun protection measures such as sunscreen, protective clothing, and sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays. These precautions help minimize the risk of eye and skin damage from prolonged exposure to UV radiation.
