Comparison of advantages and disadvantages of common high voltage linear constant current schemes

With the large-scale introduction of led into commercial and home lighting, customers put forward more stringent requirements on the performance, price and reliability of products. On the one hand, the luminous efficiency of LED is required to improve and the price is required to decrease. On the other hand, more requirements are put forward for the life of LED lamps. Because power supply is similar to traditional switching power supply principle, the simultaneous interpreting circuit is complex, electronic components are more, production process is complex, production cost is higher, and the probability of failure is higher. In order to reduce the cost, a number of solution companies in the industry have launched a high-voltage linear constant current IC scheme. This scheme does not need a high-frequency transformer, and some solutions do not need electrolytic capacitors, which simplifies the technological process of lamps and lanterns, and also achieves the purpose of directly driving LED with commercial power, and the cost is greatly reduced. The common advantages and disadvantages are as follows:

Advantages 1: no high frequency transformer, no EMC, low harmonic;
Advantages 2: low production cost, simple scheme, small size;
Advantage 3: current negative temperature compensation characteristics, effective protection of LED chip;
Advantage 4: constant current diode ESD > 8000v, all schemes can absorb 1000V lightning surge (90 degree phase).

Disadvantage 1: can not take into account both efficiency and power factor, can only choose one.
Disadvantage 2: the power output is high voltage, the product electrical isolation must be done well.
Drawback 3: the same scheme, can not do full voltage constant current.
