What are the advantages of using 6VDC or 9VDC 3535 SMD LEDs compared with 3VDC types?
Can they reduce resistor consumption and power loss when designing with a 12VDC input and only 1–2 LEDs on the PCB?
Yes, using 6VDC or 9VDC LEDs instead of 3VDC types can significantly reduce resistor loss and improve efficiency in 12VDC systems.
Here's why:
Higher Forward Voltage → Less Voltage Drop on Resistor
With 3V LEDs, two pieces in series = 6V total, leaving 6V across the resistor (from 12V supply).
With one 9V LED, only 3V is dropped on the resistor.
→ Less wasted power as heat in the resistor.
Higher Efficiency
Because the resistor dissipates less power, the overall system efficiency increases (less heat, longer lifetime).
Simpler Circuit Design
You can drive 1–2 LEDs directly from 12V without complex constant-current circuits.
Fewer components → smaller PCB, lower cost.
Better Thermal Management
Lower power loss in resistors means less heat generated on the PCB, improving LED stability.

✅ Example Calculation:
12V input, 3V LED, 2 in series = 6V across LEDs, 6V across resistor.
→ Power loss = I × 6V
12V input, 9V LED, 1 in series = 9V across LED, 3V across resistor.
→ Power loss = I × 3V
→ 50% less power wasted in the resistor.
