Why we need to pack the white color smd leds in glass lens instead of silicone lens?
When we compare white color SMD LEDs with silicone lenses versus glass (quartz) lenses, there are several important factors related to durability, thermal stability, light transmission, and brightness that explain the choice of material in different applications.
1. High-Temperature Environments (e.g., Steel Mills)
In high-temperature environments like a steel mill, where temperatures can reach 800°C or more, silicone lenses have a significant disadvantage compared to quartz glass lenses. Here's why:
Silicone Lenses: Silicone is a relatively soft and flexible material, but it has a lower temperature tolerance, typically around 200°C to 250°C. When exposed to high temperatures over time, the silicone material tends to degrade, leading to yellowing or discoloration. This aging process weakens the material, reducing both the transparency and performance of the lens. In such harsh environments, silicone lenses will quickly lose their effectiveness, and the LED will produce less light over time.
Quartz Glass Lenses: In contrast, quartz glass (a form of glass made from silicon dioxide) is far more resistant to high temperatures, typically withstanding temperatures up to 1000°C without significant degradation. Quartz glass maintains its transparency and structural integrity even under extreme conditions, making it ideal for environments like steel mills, where the temperature can cause rapid degradation of other materials.
Thus, in these high-temperature applications, quartz glass lenses ensure longer lifespan and consistent performance of the LEDs, which is essential for reducing maintenance and replacement costs.

2. Brightness Reduction Due to Multiple Refractions
Now, regarding the brightness difference between LEDs with silicone lenses and those with quartz glass lenses, the reason for the reduction in brightness in the glass-lens LEDs lies in the number of refractions light undergoes as it passes through the material.
LED with Silicone Lens (2 Refractions): In a typical silicone-lensed LED package, the light from the LED chip undergoes two refractions:
From the LED chip (usually an epitaxial layer) into the silicone lens.
From the silicone lens into the air (or the surrounding environment). The silicone lens material has a relatively low refractive index, so the light does not get bent too much, and the energy loss through these refractions is relatively low.
LED with Quartz Glass Lens (3 Refractions): When the LED has a quartz glass lens, the light goes through an additional refraction step:
From the LED chip into the quartz glass.
From the quartz glass into the air.
Finally, from the air back into the quartz glass when the light exits the lens and enters the surrounding air.
Each refraction step causes a loss of light intensity because light is partially reflected and absorbed at each interface, reducing the total brightness of the LED. The higher refractive index of quartz glass (around 1.46) compared to silicone (which has a refractive index of around 1.4) also means the light is bent more sharply, which can cause further scattering and energy loss.
Despite the reduced brightness due to the increased number of refractions, quartz glass lenses are still preferred in many high-temperature or specialized industrial applications because their thermal stability and durability outweigh the minor decrease in brightness. Additionally, the brightness loss from the extra refraction step can often be compensated for by the design of the LED itself, such as the use of more powerful chips or better optical coatings to improve light output.
Summary:
Quartz Glass Lenses are needed in high-temperature environments like steel mills because they can withstand much higher temperatures without degrading, whereas silicone lenses would age quickly under such conditions.
The brightness reduction in LEDs with quartz glass lenses occurs because the light undergoes three refractions (chip → glass → air → glass → air), compared to just two refractions (chip → silicone → air) in silicone-lensed LEDs. This causes a slight decrease in light output due to multiple reflections and refractions.
In environments where thermal stability is critical, such as in industrial applications, the durability and performance of quartz glass lenses make them the better choice, despite the minor trade-off in brightness.
